What would you do?

My mom was recently Diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer. The cancer caused a tumur like growth on the shin of her leg. A week after she was diagnosed they scheduled an in office surgery to remove it. They told her that since the growth was small enough they would do it while she was awake, but if it was any bigger they would have to send her to the main office and have her put to sleep and the proceedure would be a little more complex.

On the day of my mom's surgery, the Doctor who preformed the proceedure told my mother that the tumor was bigger than expected (they had to take more) but went ahead and proceeded as planned. Originaly the surgey was only supose to last as long as 20 minutes but lasted for an hour and a half and the PREGNANT doctor kept getting up and leaving the room. I just really feel like they did a very unprofessional job on my mother and they didn't even give her any kind of at home instructions on how to care for her leg. What should we do?

What would you do?
YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE MEDICAL BOARD AND FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THE DOCTOR. ALSO, YOU CAN WRITE A LETTER THE DOCTOR AND SEND IT TO HER. SOUNDS LIKE THEY DID NOT HANDLE YOUR MOTHER, WHOM I SURE WAS SCARED, WITH THE BED SIDE MANNER THEY SHOULD HAVE.

CALL THE HMO AND REQUEST ANOTHER DOCTOR. THEY CAN ALSO DIRECT YOU AS TO HOW TO FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT.

PLEASE FIND OUT WHAT HER HOME INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD BE. MY AUNT HAD THIS BUT DID NOT GET TREATED IN TIME AND PASSED AWAY.

TELL HER I AM KEEPING HER IN MY PRAYERS.

GOOD LUCK. LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE I CAN HELP YOU WITH. I AM IN THE INSURANCE FIELD AND HAVE BEEN FOR 15 YEARS.
Reply:The person ahead of me is right. Add this to the list. Take pictures of your mother's leg. Then pack her up in the car and take her to the Emergency Room at a different hospital. They will take care of the infection and refer you to their oncology department.
Reply:Get her to ANOTHER Doctor, ASAP! Wow...sounds fishy to me...this Dr did your Mom no favors by sending her home like that...and if she cannot perform her job properly, she needs to go on leave until her child is born...sounds like she's putting many lives at risk (hers, her unborn child and those of her patients)...

ALL reputable Dr's and/or medical facilities will send you home with WRITTEN instructions, go over them before you leave to be sure you understand them and to answer any questions you may have before you go home. If this Dr did not..she and her office are seriously risking the health and lives of their patients. Not good.

Call another Dr and have your Mom seen RIGHT AWAY...infection at this point could be deadly...no joke...

Let this new Dr know ALL the facts...have them get your Mom's records from her current Dr...

Cedars Siani, Mayo Clinic and Duke University Hosp. all have excellent cancer websites...(you can also check WebMD or "Google" "Squamous Cell Carcinoma:)...

Good luck to you and her...
Reply:Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor of epidermal keratinocytes that invades the dermis, usually occurring in sun-exposed areas. Local destruction may be extensive, and metastases occur in advanced stages. Diagnosis is by biopsy. Treatment depends on the tumor's characteristics and may involve curettage and electrodesiccation, surgical excision, cryosurgery, or, occasionally, radiation therapy.

Most (95%) of squamous cell tumors may be cured if removed promptly. New tumors may develop, so affected individuals should be diligent about examining the skin. Regular examination by the health care provider is usually required.

Please see the web pages for more details on Squamous cell carcinoma.
