Insulin Resistance...?

Diagnosed with IR what kind of symptoms do you have? I have uncontrolled hair growth, dark skin patches and skin tags. Irregular period and I am obese. My doctor recently prescribed Metformin. If you had any of these symptoms, did any get better with Metformin or did it get worse. Please do not post links on other web pages, I already been through all of them, I need real people with real experiences. Thank you!!

Insulin Resistance...?
I am very sorry to read this. But once you have doctor who is willing to listen to you and explain what you can do, that is all you need. You can find some honest people here who can give you tip or two, still, just listen to your doc.

Metformin is the best medication outthere for IR. And of course you MUST lose weight, just like the other members have said to you.

Geting medication to control your insulin before it became Diabetis II is the best thing which happen to you. Just remember, if you don't follow up with your doc, and don't take your meds, that is exactly what is going to happen.

So good luck to you!!
Reply:I was first diagnosed insulin resistant in 2002, which is a way of saying that I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Eventually I was found to have type 1 diabetes, after further testing.

Symptoms are similar to those of people with diabetes, but more or less noticeable depending on how long you have had diabetes. Have you noticed frequent urinating? Unusual thirst?

Anyway... hope this helps. If I may suggest a site, with your permission, you should consider TuDiabetes.com, a community of people touched by diabetes: if it's people with real experiences that you are looking for, there's over 1,000 of them there...
Reply:I'm sorry, but I just can't believe you've been through all of the pages covering your symptoms. You've got a classic case of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). Metformin will simply help (a little) with the I.R. The ONLY cure for those symptoms is the same as the treatment for type 2 diabetes. Since you don't want any links. I'll let you do the rest.

Oh, btw.... a healthy diet, daily exercise, and weight loss will absolutely do the trick. If you ever decide you want to learn more, visit some of the links I've posted in my profile. You'll find that I have done my homework, and I've found lots of very useful sites. I've lost nearly 50 pounds and feel twenty years younger as a result of learning all I can about insulin resistance. I have a simple motto: "You can never know too much when it comes to your health."

EDIT 10/04 am:

Okay, if the doctor says it's not PCOS, I'm still going to go with the diet, exercise, weight loss idea. It's done wonders for me. No more depression, I feel great, and my blood glucose is easy to manage. Start losing the weight, eat to live instead of living to eat, get out in the sun and exercise, and you'll be amazed at how good you feel in just a few weeks. Trust me, it works. Just click on ole Foghorn and check out my links. I've been through depression, I've been through being overweight, I've been through poor health, I've been through skin tags (try tea tree oil... melaleuca alterniflora from Rite-Aid), just about everything (except PCOS).... there's no easy fix. You're just going to have to make a lifestyle change. I tried giving up, and it's not nearly as pleasant as proving the doctors wrong and starting a new, healthy life. All the stuff you need to make a turnaround is within my web pages.
Reply:I am 21/female, have IR, and I take Metformin, I really like it. It helped me loose a little bit of weight in the beginning. I know sometimes when I haven't taken it for a couple days I get headaches, so I think my body likes how Metformin helps digest food.

I know how hard it is to lose weight when you are IR, but don't give up. I have to force myself to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch AND exercise if I want to lose weight. This summer I lost 30 lbs YAY but when on my honeymoon and gained 10 of it back. I thought I'd be safe eating junk for 2 weeks, but turned out 2 weeks of not watching my diet sabotaged 1 full month of HARD work. Email me if you feel like you want to talk about it :D
Reply:Losing weight helps a lot.
Reply:when i was pregnant i only gained 15-20 lbs with both of my kids. right after birth i was pre-pregoo weight, each time about 3 months after birth all of a sudden i put on 30 lbs, got freakishly tired and my hair started falling out. went to my ob, her pa, and a gp all said different crap that didnt address my unexplained weight gain. finally made my own appt with an endo, my thyroid levels were freakishly high, and i was IR. she put me on synthroid and metformin, within 3 months i lost 30 lbs with no change to diet or activity level, and my fatigue totally went away. it works if you take it right. ive plateaued now and the rest is up to me to diet and exercise to get off that first extra 30 thats still haning on. good luck!
