Hoss is a 14 week old Yorkie and should be about 3 lbs as an adult. Recently he was sick with low blood sugar and coccidia. We treated all of our dogs and then we found out that one of the other puppies had hookworms and treated them for that also. Then I noticed Hoss's hair was falling out under his chin and shortly after that on his belly. Now he has thinning spots on his head just above his eyebrows. I haven't taken him to the vet cause I thot it was just a reaction from being so sick but it has continued to fall out, his coat feels very coarse near his body where the new growth is coming in. As far as I can tell no new growth is coming in where the bald spots are but neither is it smooth skin either. I know it is not mange, there is no crustiness on his skin. I will take him to the vet next week as soon as they can fit him in but in the meantime I was wondering if it might be something else.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Something I can possibly treat at home? Sylvia
My puppy is losing hair under his chin and on his belly.?
It could be a million different things. Personally my dog has lost fur due to a flea allergy, which had to be treated immediatly with medication. If your vet has a week waiting list ... that is crazy, your dog could have a life threatening illness. I have never had a waiting list at any vet, you might consider finding a new vet?
Reply:you must have parasite
Reply:it could be demodectic mange. (this type doesn't make them crusty like sarcoptic mange). Demodex is seen in young dogs and is not contagious to others. ringworm is also a common puppy thing to cause hairloss, but you should see crusts.
he should see a vet.
Reply:This occured with my dog also, he was a "bitsa" though, not purebred.
I put minced garlic into his food and within a fortnight he was as good as new.. Good luck
Reply:go to the vets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! be case i am one
Reply:you have a yorkie that is supposed to be only 3 lbs full grown??? Whoa-lets not even start in on how many things are wrong with an unethical breeder who will change a breed standard enough to try to accomplish this horrible breed mutation. A yorkie that was bred to be only three lbs full grown is probably doomed to a life time of health probs...To be completely honest, as cute as your little puppy probably is and always will be (providing he keeps his hair) he is what an ethical breeder would consider a "genetic train wreck." They are not supposed to be that small, it isn't healthy. For a breeder to get her dogs bred down so small, she probably sacrificed the health of her breeding stock to accomplish the small size...
BTW, Mange isn't always accompanied by crustiness, sometimes it isn't even red or irritated looking, especially in the early stages, sometimes hair loss is the only symptom- Since his immune system has been recently weakened, there is a very good chance that the natural antibodies that fight off the body's resistance to mange can't do their job. All dogs have the organisms that cause mange, their body is just able to supress it and it is never able to cause a reaction. When the immune system is compromised, the mange organisms see it as an open door and that is probably what is going on with your boy. There's only 1 way to know for sure- go get a skin scrape at his vet, and I'd also be looking over the health guarantee that I got from the breeder to make sure she did guarantee the health of the puppy for at leat the first year of it's life against genetic defects that could be created by breeding for extremely small dogs.
