Is my dog losing or growing hair?

I found a stray male chihuahua over the weekend that is either losing or growing fur all over his back. He is not scratching and is otherwise fine and playful. The hair loss/growth is not symetrical at all or in any uniform shape. His skin is not reddenned or darkened at all. He is very clean, neutered, and house trained. He must have been a very loved pet and I am still looking for his owner just in case ( I don't want to take someone's pet). Does anyone know how to tell if he is losing or growing hair in case I get to keep him?

He might be shedding.. You could check with a local vet to see what they think..
Reply:could be mange. just lots of care. get an antifungal shampoo, but rinse with an organic cleaner that is safe for him if he licks it. dogs lick themselves, so they get the squirts from soap!

Reply:Brush him! You can get nice "mitt" brushes that are great for short coats... it will take off any loose fur, and you should be able to tell if its regular shedding, growing, or total hair loss. If you're still worried, maybe have a vet check it out to be sure.
